If you’re on the hunt for the trendiest French spot in Calgary right now, Francine’s needs to be at the top of your list. Tucked into Chinatown, this cozy French bar has quickly become one of the hardest reservations in the city, and once you go, you’ll understand exactly why.
What Makes Francine’s Special?
From the moment you walk in, Francine’s feels like a little slice of Paris dropped right into Chinatown. It’s small but lively, the kind of space that’s perfect for a spontaneous drink or a big celebration. No white tablecloths, no fuss, just really good French-inspired food, old-world cocktails, and good people. Casual yet full of flavour, it’s exactly the kind of place I love bringing friends to.
The Food: So Cheesy, They Give Out Lactaid Pills
I’m not kidding, this menu is so heavy on the cheese that Francine’s actually keeps Lactaid pills on hand for guests (market price)! If you’re a cheese lover like me, this alone tells you everything you need to know.
- Cheese Puffs – light as air and served with a warm Parmesan mousse for dipping. A must-order, don’t even think about skipping these.
- Steak Frites – tender, perfectly cooked steak with crispy frites. Simple, classic, and done exactly right.
- French Toast – topped with shaved Comté cheese, honey caramel, and honey ice cream. Sweet, salty, and unlike any French toast you’ve had before. This dish has become the signature at Francine’s, and it earns the hype.
Drinks Worth Trying
Francine’s has a fun, old-world cocktail list, but my personal favourite find was their house-made pineapple soda. It’s made with real pineapple, and you can genuinely taste it, fresh, a little tart, and so refreshing alongside all that rich food. Ask your server what’s pouring, since the drink menu changes often and there’s always something new worth trying.
The Vibe
Francine’s is casual, non-pretentious, and absolutely delicious. It’s a spot for French food lovers and cheese lovers alike, and it’s quickly become one of the hottest tables in Calgary. Getting a reservation isn’t easy, which should tell you everything you need to know.
Pro Tips Before You Go:
- Reservations are highly recommended, this place books up fast. I actually ended up going in person to reserve, since I wanted a specific date and it was already hard to get online.
- Go hungry, the small plates are meant for sharing, so bring people you don’t mind eating off the same plate with.
- Save room for the French toast. Trust me on this one.
If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out. Add it to your list.
